CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: RANGERS BEATEN BY MALMO

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard and his players have a lot of work to do after they were beaten by Swedish team Malmo FF in thethird qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League this season.

Gerrard was the mastermind as Rangers ended their run of nine years without a league title to emerge as Scottish Premiership champions at the end oflast season. Their status as Scottish champions earned them a place in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

Rangers are trying to get backinto the Champions League group stage after missing out on the group stage of competition for several seasons.Gerrard and his Rangers players need toovercome Malmo to progress into the playoffs in their bidto seal a place in the Champions League group stage.

Scottish champions Rangers have to go through both the third qualifying round and the playoffs to get into the Champions League playoffs this season.

At the end of the first leg, Malmo defeated Rangers 2-1 to move a step closer to the playoffs with all the goals coming in the second half. Swedish club Malmo broke the deadlock at the start of the second half and went on to add a second goal two minutes later to gain a foothold in the tie.

Danish winger Soren Rieks scored the opening goal of the game in the colours of Malmo with twominutesgone in the second half. Serbian midfielder VeljkoBirmancevic was the recipient of the second Malmo goal two minutes after the opener from Rieks.

Malmo preserve their two-goal lead until added time when Northern Ireland international Steven Davis pulled one back togive Rangers a lifeline in the tie ahead of the second leg. Their second legclash will take place at Ibrox next week Tuesday.
