I Hate Rangers

Rangers are set to announce the director of football the club decided to employ to keep the team running even in the absence of a substantive manager.

The director of football is expected to oversee football management, scouting and signings, amongst other things at the club. The model has brought successes in European teams and Rangers want to evolve. The head coach would be under the director of football, managing the squad, trainings and team selections for games.

One of the clear advantages of the system is continuity. The system was obviously what helped Hearts FC. Craig Levein was the director who managed the transition from Robbie Neilson to Ian Cathro.

In addition, the system helps the managers focus solely on the team, leaving aside the politics that could be involved. Many names have been linked with DoF role.

Paul Mitchell is one man that can spot talent. Former MK Dons coach Karl Robinson helped the former Wigan and Dons defender transition into the role when he retired from professional football. He is set to exit Tottenham Hotspurs after resigning last year. He joined Mauricio Pochettino when he moved from Southampton to White Hart Lane. However he found it difficult to work with Daniel Levy hence his exit. He is one of the contenders for the DoF role at Ibrox.

Dutchman Mark Wotte said he met with the Rangers management over the DoF role in 2015. With the role now available, he is a possibility.

Formers Reds skipper Graeme Souness, who was sacked by the Magpies far back in 2006, could get the DoF role particularly as he managed the club in the past. The 63-year old has the experience but his time out of the game and criticism of Dave King – the club’s chief executive – could hinder him.

The director of scouting and recruitment at Premier League side Southampton Ross Wilson is a possibility. He is young at 34. Though he never played the game, he is sterling in his role that the Saints had to head hint him.
